The George Howard Memorial Lecture is a heritage lecture series at Meharry Medical College to honor the life and legacy of George Howard, Jr. Dr. Howard was one of the first students recruited into the Meharry M.D./Ph.D. program and was considered to be a promising biomedical scientist and physician prior to his untimely death on December 14, 1985. Each year, the Graduate Student Association honors Dr. Howard with a memorial lecture to continually celebrate his achievements and contributions to the Meharry family. In addition to the lecture, students who have successfully passed their qualifying exams and advanced to Ph.D. candidacy are presented with white coats to honor this milestone in their academic career and a scholarship is awarded to a student who has achieved candidacy.
