Global Health Opportunities for Health Professional Students


Anne C. Carter Global Health Fellowship

Awards four (4) AMWA national student members a 2-year fellowship, with funding to support local global health project implementation and an international clinical experience. Annual deadline: September

Benjamin H. Kean Travel Fellowship in Tropical Medicine

Awards funding for medical students to conduct research or clinical training in tropical medicine or global health with at least one month at a site endemic for diseases or illnesses common to the tropics. Annual deadline: March

Doris Duke International Clinical Research fellowship

The Doris Duke International Clinical Research Fellowship from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation provides an opportunity for up to three US medical students to complete a yearlong international clinical research project in Tanzania or Kenya.

Fulbright-Fogarty Awards in Public Health

A 9 month international research for U.S. students who are currently enrolled in medical school or a graduate-level program and who are interested in global health can apply for this Fellowship. Sites include Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, Bangladesh, China, Thailand, Brazil, and Peru.  Annual deadline: October

Medical Missions

GE/NMF International Medical Scholars Program

Provides a two-month mentored clinical experience in the provision of primary healthcare in Ghana and Kenya for fourth year medical students. Annual deadline: Check website

Jose’s Hands

Provides travel grants for first year medical students to perform public health and basic clinical services abroad. Annual deadline: March


Funding Opportunities

AWHS Overseas Assistance Grant Program

The AWHS Overseas Assistance Grant program provides travel grants for medical students and residents working in clinics around the world.  Students have traveled to a number of countries including Peru, India, Nepal, South Africa. Annual deadlines: January, April, July, October

Christian Medical and Dental Associations

CMDA provides various mission scholarships for student and resident members wishing to spend time overseas as a rotation elective. We also provides a scholarship to medical students beginning their 1st or 2nd year to pay up to $25,000 per year toward medical school for those who go into full-time missions after graduation. Annual deadline: varies by scholarship

Global Health Education

Child Family Health International

CFHI Programs offer first-hand experiences alongside local physicians and public health experts in developing countries. Programs combine instruction, experience, service, and reflection, to create a model that supports physicians, clinical sites and communities abroad, addresses the healthcare needs of the underserved. Graduate Certificate in Global Health (through Meharry-Vanderbilt Student Alliance)

OPEN TO MEHARRY STUDENTS AS PART OF MEHARRY-VANDERBILT ALLIANCE! This interdisciplinary graduate-level certificate program in the study of global health is a vital step in initiating and promoting joint training opportunities in global health. Students fulfilling all requirements will be granted a global health certificate at the time of graduation. Annual deadline: Two months before graduation date (March)
