Subject: GSA Feed The Homeless TOMORROW , PAID mentoring and other announcements

Greetings,

On Friday December 6 (tomorrow), GSA will be volunteering to feed the homeless. Below is a brief description:

Every Friday night we go out to the streets of Nashville, under the Jefferson Street bridge and 2nd Street and help feed the homeless community. Feeding runs from 6-7:30pm. All volunteers meet up at Area Command of the Salvation Army at 631 Dickerson Pike at 5:30pm. From there, volunteers caravan over to the site.  Some will be serving food, others will be out and about handing out snacks and cleaning up trash.  All volunteers must understand that although the desire is to have a specific job, it is the heart of the Salvation Army that we meet and know the community that we are serving. We want you to know their names, backgrounds and stories, and if so, then give them a meal. The relationship is the key.  This is a great opportunity to not only offer food but also good conversation, let folks know there are others who care! It is to serve, and to be served by our street community.

If you wish to participate, please sign-up via the Google Document below

This is a GREAT opportunity to give back to the community.  Let’s not forget how blessed we are.  Take a moment to bless someone else.  We look forward to GSA’s contribution to improving Nashville.

Let’s put our motto into action: Worship of God through service to mankind

ENCOURAGE YOUR CLASSMATES TO PARTICIPATE!  We look forward to seeing you ALL under the bridge.  ***If you purchased a GSA T-Shirt, please wear it tomorrow for community service***

As discussed in our past GSA meeting, we are currently interested in planning a February social event which will encompass all local professional schools (Vanderbilt, Belmont, Tennesse State University, Lipscomb, etc). We are super excited about this awesome opportunity to network! But, we need your help! If you woule like to help plan this event let us know!  Please send Stephanie Pulliam SPulliam09@email.mmc.edu an email or sign up via the Google document below to become part of something this campus or Nashville has never seen before...a true display of comradery among all the diverse professionals in Nashville!

My name is Jessica Ehule.  I am the program coordinator of the IMPACT4Health Program at Meharry Medical College. I have a great opportunity for you to serve the community. The IMPACT4Health program works with the Metro Nashville Public School (MNPS) system to expose high school students to health related careers.

For the past couple of years, we have held an event called the Healthy People Challenge.  The Healthy People challenge is an event where we invite students from MNPS high schools to participate in a day of creative thinking and learning.  During this event, the students are presented with a health-related case study and divided into groups to develop possible solutions to the case.  The high school students have the opportunity to interact with college/professional students, as well as go on a short tour of Meharry's campus.

As a mentor, your job will be to guide the students through the health case study by asking them key questions if they get stuck, or encouraging all students to participate in the discussion making sure introverts and extroverts have the opportunity to contribute to the group discussion. You would serve as the guide on the tour of Meharry's campus, and have lunch with them as well. During the tour and lunch, this is a great time to answer any questions the students may have about college, your story, etc.

The Healthy People Challenge will be held over about 7-9 days (not necessarily consecutive).  The event will last from around 7:00am to 1:00pm.  Please note, you do not have to commit to all 7 days to be a part of the challenge.  If you can only serve for a couple of days, that is just fine.  Also, if you are not available for the full time period (7am-1pm) on a day you would like to participate, just let us know and we will work it out as best we can.

This opportunity does have a stipend associated with it, so you will be compensated for your time.  We are also planning a formal orientation for all mentors prior to the event.  I would like to know if you prefer a weekday evening or Saturday orientation. You will also be compensated for your time spent at orientation.

Final dates for the event are still being adjusted, but they will all be in February and the first week of March.  We will have a final list of dates by orientation  (which will be held in January).

If you have any college or professional school friends/classmates that would like to be involved in this opportunity, please forward my information to them.  We need more mentors and would be happy to have them as part of the Healthy People Challenge.  Please email me back at nehule@mmc.edu if you are interested in serving as a mentor and let me know what orientation time you prefer (Weekday Evening or Saturday) as soon as possible. You may also sign up via the Google Doc below:

Once the orientation and event dates are set, I will send a follow up email. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via the information provided below.
